Linda Cateura was a literary editor of Harper's Bazaar for seven years, an associate editor of Woman's Day, and a freelance book reviewer for The New York Times and Saturday Review. She has studied at The New School, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Art Students League, where she attended David A. Leffel's classes. It was there that she wrote the notes that form the basis of this book.David A. Leffel was born in New York City and gives workshops and demonstrations throughout the nation. His work hangs in both private and public collections, including the J.B. Speed art museum in Louisville, Kentucky, and his ideas and paintings also have been featured in many publications.

It is with some regret that I give only two stars to this book - and agree with the other critical reviewer. The fact is that, although I am convinced that David Leffel is a wonderful teacher and a real master in his craft, I cannot imagine who could profit from this book. As mentioned, the book is merely a loosely organized collection of more or less aphoristic snippets from Leffel's lessons. Apart from a handful of really enlightening and useful comments (which may fill one or two pages altogether), a great portion is obscure to the point of senselessness, contradictory, repetitive or referring to student's work which is not reproduced - and therefore incomprehensible. The clear and consistent comments refer not to oil painting but to basics of chiaroscuro and composition that should be familiar to any art student (in general, most of the content of the book does not refer to oil painting but could equally applied to any medium or to drawing - the title is therefore somewhat misguiding). You need to have had a considerable background in the principles of realistic drawing and painting and to have experienced a studio environment and studio critique to really understand and appreciate this book...but if you have you probably do not need such a book in the first place.The art - exclusively by Leffel - is very inspiring, although, as mentioned, the quality of the reproductions is very erratic. I wonder why the author has not put some more effort into organizing and clarifying the content and securing consistent quality of the pictures. Seems like a missed chance for a really useful book.
